Contemporary Experience of Russian Muslim Polygamous Families: Narrative Analysis

Abstract:
The article is devoted polygamous family in contemporary Russian Muslims. We investigate the questions of how polygamous family is perceived by Muslims, what emotions the Russian Muslim men and women are experiencing, what motives they are driven. These problems are considered on the examples of islam.ru site materials for 2009-2015. We conclude that contemporary Russian Muslim community with difficulty implements the idea of polygamy. Public assessment of this phenomenon is rather negative than positive. This is partly caused by the experience of Soviet and Russian system of education with its specific individualism and self-importance of women in family and society, the romanticizing of love and marriage, as well as the existence of the system of education in the context of Christian tradition in Russia, with its view of marriage as a sacred union of one man and one woman.
