Sociological analysis of health in subjective assessments of the elderly population: methodology and results for the Grodno region of the Republic of Belarus

An analysis of methodological approaches to the study and measurement of selfassessment of health has been carried out, and tools have been developed that are most relevant for studying the health of people aged 60 years and older. The WHOQOL-26 method, a standardized Russian version of WHOQOL-BREF, was recognized as the most methodologically correct in terms of assessing subjective feelings regarding their health by respondents in older age groups. Using the example of the Grodno region, an analysis of satisfaction with the health status of this category of respondents was carried out, the dependence of POPs on gender, place of residence, availability of work, marital status, presence of children, living with their children together or separately, and receipt of a pension was investigated. It was found that there are three clear ranking places (p < 0.05) in the structure of answers, which correspond to the following points for assessing satisfaction with one’s own health on a five-point scale: the first place corresponds to the answer option “3 points”. Respondents are insignificantly more likely (52.44%) to rate their satisfaction with their own health as average and below average (1-3 points). The indicator of satisfaction with one’s own health revealed significant resistance to socio-demographic factors. A comparison with previously published research results in the Russian population has shown that poor self-assessments of health among people in older age groups in the Grodno region correlate with those in the Russian Federation, while the proportion of good self-assessments significantly exceeds the corresponding indicators for Russians.

Aging as an object of research in social sciences

The article provides an overview of the institutionalization of aging as a subject of interest in the social sciences. Gradually drifting from the purely medical-biological field, aging begins to be studied within a separate discipline — gerontology, which in turn transforms first into social gerontology, then critical gerontology appears, and finally cultural gerontology. Currently, aging is actively studied by representatives of the social sciences and sociologists in particular, predominantly Western ones. The institutionalization of the topic is achieved through the creation and development of thematic journals, the inclusion of aging as a regular theme at major international conferences in social sciences, the emergence of research projects and even separate organizations focused on aging. The development of the topic in the Russian context, like many others, has a catching-up character, but nevertheless is embodied in various forms.

Living Indology at MAE in the 1920s and 30s

The tradition of studying “living India” since the late 19th century. developed in the India Department of the Academic Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography. Continuing the legacy of Ivan Minaev, A^ander and Ludmila Meerwart in 1914-1918 collected in South Asia objects that were significant for local cultures and recorded ethnographic information in inventories. These collections formed the basis of the MAE’s classic exhibition “Peoples of South Asia”, which lasted until 2023. The Meerwarths created the Indian Department of the MAE in 1924. Indologists-graduates were invited to work there. In 1920s A. Meerwartt taught “living Indology” (languages, history, ethnography, art of India) to students from various faculties and departments of the Leningrad Oriental Institute, the Leningrad Institute of Living Oriental Languages, the State Institute of Art History, etc. In the 1930 s Virendranath Chatopadaya, Head of the Cabinet of India, also actively participated in the Oriental studies in Leningrad universities. In the 1930s Orientalists B. V. Semichev and V. E. Krasnodembsky worked in the Cabinet of India. There were significant time gaps between the appointments of heads of the India Department, so there was no direct succession. But the rich potential of museum materials and the education they received allowed scientists to work in their specialty and promote Indian culture in Russia through museum means.
